Retail Sales in U.S. Cool on Early Easter and Seasonable Weather

May 15 (Bloomberg) — Retail sales in the US rose in April at the slowest pace of the year, showing unseasonably mild weather and pre-Easter shopping may have pulled consumers to stores the prior month.

The 0.1 percent gain followed a 0.7 percent increase in March, Commerce Department figures showed today in Washington. Economists projected an advance of 0.1 percent, according to the median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey.

Categories like building materials, clothing and department stores dropped in April as the weather-induced gains of the first three months of 2012, the warmest on record, faded. Weaker employment growth will probably also make it more difficult for households...

Lafayette auto show creates optimism

Kris Wartelle

Local car salesmen were experiencing high interest on the first day of the 2012 Lafayette Auto Dealers Show and Sale Tuesday, and business seemed to be going well.

I am definitely very optimistic, said Lafayette Auto Dealers Association President Ryan Leblanc. It seems just off the first day weve had very good response. There are a lot of good products out there and people are noticing that.

Leblanc said so far 2012 has been a good year for car sales and said he believes it will end up being even better. Add to that the 25-year history of the auto show, and there is good reason for optimism.

This show has been successful for more than 20 years, said...

General Motors Holds Its Ground

At first glance, April was a surprisingly subdued month for auto sales in the United States: After several months of strong year-over-year gains, sales rose just 2.3% last month. And while Toyota (NYS: TM) posted a solid increase over its tsunami-crushed year-ago sales numbers, key players like Ford (NYS: F) and General Motors (NYS: GM) actually posted declines for the month.

New-vehicle sales are a key indicator of consumer confidence — and obviously an important metric of health for auto stocks. Is it time to worry?

Not yet. Fortunately, most of these numbers are better than they look.

DealerTrack revenue jumps as car sales rise

The company produces software used by auto dealers to submit credit applications, process motor vehicle registrations and perform a variety of other functions.

Its revenue is based on both subscriptions and on the number of times dealers use the system to process transactions. So when auto sales rise, DealerTracks revenue follows suit.

Dealers have been excited to see an increase in the number of shoppers, which they attribute to the improving economy, said Mark F. ONeil, chairman and chief executive of DealerTrack, during a call with investors Tuesday.

The surge in revenue prompted the company to raise its guidance on its expected revenue for the year, to between $375...

April auto sales cool; Hyundai, Kia and Nissan fall off prior pace

Auto sales in April fell back from the robust growth they have logged so far this year.

Industry sales rose just 2.1% over April 2011, according to Alec Gutierrez, an analyst at auto information company Kelley Blue Book. Sales have averaged a year-over-year gain of about 13% through March.

One reason for the slowdown is a quirk in the calendar. Some states make auto dealers close on Sundays, which contributed to three fewer selling days than the same month a year earlier.

But automakers also said sales in April started slowly, strengthening near the end.

Hyundai, Kia and Nissan, brands that had double-digit gains during the first part of this year, all cooled off last...
